"The Discipline of Waiting"

clip_image002A friend once showed me an article on the sacrament of waiting. Having read it, it made me view waiting as something so sacred that you cannot let yourself interfere with it. Indeed, it is true; a year after that, a man came into my life, my “ideal man” without me having the slightest clue of his coming. That was because I respected the sacrament of waiting.

But let us not dwell on that. Not all relationships are bound to last as long as you are not with the person God had prepared for you. Reading my book “Quest for Love” by Elisabeth Elliot, I came across an article titled, “The Discipline of Waiting”. Actually, it was my dear friend who highlighted this topic for me to carefully read.

One of the passages from the Scripture mentioned there was this: Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret. (Psalm 37:7) I thought of how I can put this into action in this fast-paced world. In my human standards, it sounded so idealistic that it became too good to be true. Isn’t it distressing seeing your friends get married with you still in the waiting line? And where is that man that the Lord has promised? Is the person whom I have grown fond of The One? Why are there no loud signs of ending with that Man of God as my other half?

The Lord’s answer came through this passage:

“I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” (Ps. 27:13-14)

Today, I would rather wait for the Lord in the silence of my heart than jump into a relationship that is bound to fail. Just as a ripened fruit gives you nature’s sweetest taste, so does a lifelong relationship that needs to be rightfully built in God’s perfect time. Many older people would give unsolicited advices to us single people of not marrying at all to be spared from more sufferings. I say, I’m not afraid. For I believe that God’s choice for me is always the best, and that God’s timing is always the perfect time to enjoy His immense blessings.

Endure. Take heart and have the courage to wait for the Lord. With arms wide open and a heart totally surrendered to God, no one can go wrong. For it is in the waiting that you see the gem and the depth of your satisfaction. The journey of Faith and Trust is blocked with enormous obstacles, but those are nothing when you know deep in your heart that God is guiding you to the right path.

And when the waiting seems just too long, be still; God holds the keys to the doors; He will open them in His time.

  1. Love it! I am a very impatient person. I dislike doing the same things over and again. I dislike long CPS. Next time I will remember God holds the keys to the doors; He will open them in His time. Thank you.
